Fighting climate change, especially through large-scale deployment of renewable energy is one of the main challenges of the 21st century. Cities are at the forefront of this energy transition, which will happen in parallel with another revolution: digitalisation of society and the growing importance of data management. In this session, we will explore how cities and communities can benefit from digital and database tools to foster the deployment of renewable, and especially solar, energy.

Session summary
Zabala introduced the session by presenting the EU instruments for digitalisation and the Data Cellar projects to develop a platform for energy communities. Then SolarPower Europe presented the challenges of deploying solar PV to match our European targets, with a necessity to multiply by 4 to 5 the current capacity installed. It highlighted the utmost importance of digitalisation to overcome this challenge, on a continent where digitalisation enablers such as smart metering only represent 56% of total meters installed.
The participants introduced different projects where digitalisation can support the uptake of renewable energies. The European Commission presented the tools to support digitalisation.
The detailed presentations are available on the multimedia center.
