European Week of Regions and Cities

Empowering societies through education and skills for the twin transitions

Regional authorities, adult education (AE) providers and civil society organisations play a vital role in empowering communities and facilitating community acceptance of new advances, such as the digital and green transitions. Join us to hear about Cork’s approach to 'learning cities', and to discover how older people can be actors of this transition, with AE ensuring they are provided the skills for the twin transitions (notably through the European SEE-U and SMALEI projects).

Session summary

>Adult Education's Role in Twin Transitions: The session emphasized the importance of adult learning in advancing both the green and digital transitions, highlighting how education can promote sustainability, digital literacy, and inclusivity.
>Andrea Bernert-Bürkle discussed the SMALEI project, which enhances sustainability practices in adult education institutions. Its "matrix" framework helps assess and improve environmental impact across five core areas. Practical examples include installing solar panels and raising public awareness of environmental issues.
