European Week of Regions and Cities

High-Level thematic session "Regions Strengthening European Democracy"

EU Cohesion policy invests in regions’ digital and green transition. Its ultimate purpose is to ensure that these twin transitions are sustainable and inclusive. This cannot be achieved without the people’s empowerment and participation. This high-level session is a showcase of how the partnership principle looks on the ground! How citizens, local actors and civil society organisations are essential in shaping the policies and investments that impact their territories. Citizen participation, especially when it involves younger generations is a way to future-proof European regions: preventing brain-drain and depopulation, stemming discontent, and fostering truth. This session serves as a reminder to policymakers everywhere that engagement with citizens has the potential not only to meet current needs but also to build a sustainable and attractive future for tomorrow’s EU citizens.
