- Francisco Carvalho is from the city of Guimarães, Portugal. He is the Eurocities Working Group Green Areas and Biodiversity Chair and the Chair of our Adaptation Taskforce.
Francisco Carvalho has been the General, Research and Innovation Coordinator at the Landscape Laboratory since 2023. He is a guest lecturer at the School of Sciences, University of Minho, Chair of the Climate Resilience Task Force, and Co-Chair of the Working Group on Biodiversity and Green Areas at EUROCITIES, representing the Municipality of Guimarães.
Francisco holds a Ph.D. in Molecular and Environmental Biology, with a specialization in Biodiversity, Ecology, and Evolution. Part of his doctoral research was conducted at the University of Washington in Seattle, USA, as a Fulbright Scholar. He also holds a Master’s degree in Ecology and a Bachelor's degree in Applied Biology, both from the University of Minho.
He has worked in the private sector at a startup focused on the Circular Economy and Sustainability, particularly in areas such as industrial symbiosis, waste management, and innovative upcycling approaches. In this context, he also supports and represents the Municipality of Guimarães in the Circular Cities and Regions Initiative.
Francisco has provided strategic support in innovation and scientific advising to decision-making processes in the Guimarães territory, within his areas of expertise. He played an active role in Guimarães’ application for the European Green Capital 2026, particularly contributing to the domains of nature and biodiversity, as well as climate adaptation.
Throughout his career, he has participated in numerous scientific projects related to the green transition and ecology, resulting in publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and presentations at international conferences.
