Innovative tools for deploying a positive-impact economic strategy with the example of Lyon Metropolis

From 2021, Lyon Metropolis has been implementing an ambitious programme to support businesses and organisations in building a local economy that consumes fewer resources and fossil fuels, promotes jobs at all levels and meets the needs of citizens, employees and businesses alike. During the presentation, Lyon Metropolis will explain its positive-impact strategy and present three tools that other local authorities can use to support businesses in their transition: Tumulte (an animation tool for rethinking business models), the metropolitan observatory of the positive-impact economy (indicators assess social, environmental and economic issues) and Kelimpact (self-assement tools).

Session summary

Regarding the economy, Lyon Metropole aims to help businesses anticipate risks in order to become more robust, sustainable, and beneficial to society. The territory faces many future challenges, primarily due to climate change. Companies will need to manage heat, water, energy consumption, material footprint, poverty rates, and more.
Through various tools, Lyon Metropole supports companies in adapting their models to create an economic system with a positive social impact. To this end, an Observatory of Positive Impact Economy has been developed, featuring 45 to 50 indicators to measure the maturity level of companies across different areas.

This observatory is complemented by operational tools such as guides, financial aids, engineering programs, and even Kelimpact ; a free tool that helps companies assess and manage their local impact by analyzing their current standing in terms of impact economy and providing tailored solutions and recommendations.

Additionally, Lyon Metropole developed a workshop called Tumulte. In a 3.5-hour session, companies model their business, face various shock scenario cards, and then use leverage cards to generate a list of actions they can implement within 6 months and 2 years.

In conclusion, Lyon Metropole has established a broad range of free tools to help companies adapt their business models to create meaningful impact, relying on rational approaches based on the probable risks companies are likely to encounter in the metropolitan area of Lyon.
