In 2023, the Douro region made European history by bringing together 19 municipalities to act as a single European Wine City. Through over 300 events held locally and internationally – with a potential reach of 48 million people – this pioneering project elevated the Douro region’s global presence, celebrating wine, culture and community. This EU talk will explore how this collaborative model strengthened regional cohesion, promoted sustainable tourism and engaged local communities and youth, and will show how it can inspire other European regions to unlock the value of their endogenous resources and reinforce territorial identity in low-density areas through shared goals.
