- Matteo Lepore has been mayor of Bologna and the Metropolitan City since October 2021. His political career began in 1999, when he joined the Democrats of the Left, later becoming a member of the Democratic Party when it was founded in 2007.
In the 2011 local elections, he was elected city councilor of Bologna and appointed councilor for Institutional Affairs, Demographic Services, International Relations, Communication, Urban Marketing, Innovation, and Labor. In the subsequent local elections in 2016, he was re-elected as a city councilor and returned to the city council as councilor for Culture, Tourism, Cultural Heritage, Sport, and Civic Imagination.
In 2021, he won the center-left primaries and, in the same year, was elected mayor with a coalition composed of center-left parties, civic lists, and the Five Star Movement.
Since 2024, he has been a member of the European Committee of the Regions.
He graduated in Political Science from the University of Bologna and completed several master's degrees, including abroad: in 2007 in International Relations, in 2008 in Construction and Urban Planning, and in 2009 in Economics of Cooperation
