1st Conference on Coastal Adaptation to Climate Change in Island Regions: LIFE COSTAdapta Project

The event will showcase the progress of the LIFE COSTAdapta project and other good practices in coastal adaptation on islands. It'll bring together institutional representatives, European experts, and project managers to discuss innovative solutions to climate change in vulnerable territories. Additionally, the conference will address challenges related to funding, public policies, and the replicability of models in other European regions. The event will take place in Gran Canaria, one of the island territories most exposed to the effects of climate change. Attendees'll play an active role in the event's dynamics, which will include short elevator pitch-style presentations and idea exchanges

Session summary

Gran Canaria has positioned itself as a European reference in coastal adaptation to climate change in island regions, through the LIFE COSTAdapta project.

An innovative tidal pool–reef system was presented, inspired by traditional solutions of the archipelago, combining science, territorial planning and respect for local uses.

The institutional conference highlighted the importance of multilevel climate governance, the challenges of European funding, and the need for replicable models to strengthen resilience in vulnerable territories.
