European Week of Regions and Cities

Empower active cities. Tangible results of sports-related projects from across Europe

In the context of the post-Covid recovery, sports will be particularly important. Sport can be not only a factor of recovery but also a way to reach out  to citizens and to strengthen their sense of belonging to the city. The workshop will allow the participants to discover the positive impact of ACES sport labels and to learn from Erasmus+ project New Towns Sport Cities showcasing inspiring and innovative socio-sporting practices from 4 European cities.

Session summary

The session brought together between 50 and 60 participants (from 135 registered on swapcard).

The session was the perfect opportunity to share reflections about the role of sport in cities.  Firstly, the participants could discover the ACES sport labels and their impact on cities. In the second part of the session, four cities presented their Erasmus+ funded project New Towns Sport Cities, giving more visibility to this European programme. The partners have also shared their challenges and good practices in the field of sustainability in sport, gender equality in sport, urban planning for sport practice and promotion of sport as a health factor.

The session went smoothly, however, given that we had six speakers following the fusion of two sessions, it was very complicated to cover the topics in detail and the time for exchange with the audience was very limited.

Take away message

The European labels or projects in the field of sport can make cities more dynamic and inclusive for their inhabitants.

The EU provides the possibility of funding, as Erasmus+ Sport for sport-related projects.
