Municipalities are essential in creating environments where people can learn about the reasons behind inequality and how to take action to combat it. In this workshop, Sergi Ferrús, Mayor of Pedreguer (Spain) and Paulo Jorge Araújo, project manager of ADCS Carvalhais (Portugal), will share their perspectives and experience of a small European municipality, a civil society organisation and other actors working together to encourage youth participation and promote gender equality through sport.

Session summary
This workshop focused on the issue of gender equality in sport, with a special focus on the role that local authorities play in fostering gender equality. We all know that women are less likely than men to take part in sport, become coaches, and cover leadership positions. According to Eurostat, more men than women are employed in sport. Women’s sport also gets less media coverage, which is often biassed or stereotypical. Finally, they are more likely to experience gender-based violence, either physical, sexual or psychological, than men. There have been many cases reported also at very high level, such as the one at the women’s world cup involving the president of the
Spanish soccer federation Luis Rubiales.
In the presentations, the three speakers addressed different topics according to their roles and areas of interest. Ramona Marotta focused on the theoretical, historical and political basis of the European Union on gender equality in sport. On the other hand, Sergi Ferrús and Paulo Araújo, respectively mayor of the Spanish municipality of Pedreguer and member of the Portuguese Sports Association ADCS Carvalhais, gave concrete examples of the initiatives and projects they are implementing and developing in their realities.
The objective of their expositions was to analyze and identify, in theory and practice, the current situation and the challenges when it comes to promoting equal opportunities in sport.
