This event highlights the importance of evidence-informed policy designed by local authorities to deliver on urban climate objectives. The discussion will highlight the role that the rapidly developing area of data and data-driven applications is playing in helping achieve net zero and circular economy targets at local level in Europe. The event will bring together LRGs, researchers, companies and CSO to discuss the relevant way to harness data for accelerated climate action

Session summary
The Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP) event highlighted the importance of evidence-informed policy designed by local authorities to deliver on urban climate objectives.
Green transition is necessary to mitigate climate and environmental change and the twin-transition is key in decarbonising economy, minimising waste, and pollution. Twin-transition is a also way to enable a carbon-neutral European Union by 2050, and for the EU to achieve its ambition of being sustainable, fait and competitive.
Digital and environmental transitions can reinforce each other and help achieve the targets for 2050.
Local and regional governments are key to achieve the transition – 65% of the SDGs’ targets need engagement and coordination with LRGs. It is an important challenge for LRGs to achieve this twin transition, as it will require a lot of investment (human, financial, political), but they can also count on citizens engagement.
