Organised by the EU-funded DivAirCity and CrAFt projects, this session focuses on how to ensure that co-creation is fit-for-all in terms of time, place and pace to develop environmentally sustainable cities for all. This lab begins with a panel of practitioners, local authorities, and EU representatives discussing inclusive and innovative processes. Afterwards, in a practical session, participants will share best practices, policy advice, and tools to engage citizens.

Session summary
- Co-creation is a must, not an option, in cities’ path towards climate neutrality!
- Genuine co-creation takes time – you need to “co-create before you can co-create”, and by failing in the process you risk losing people’s engagement for good
- Artists and cultural professionals should be involved throughout the process to resonate with people, and not just have the delegated tasks of communication or visuals
- To get meaningfully involved in co-creation, people need to see there is room for a tangible purpose or output at the end of the process
- Digital communication reinforces and creates bubbles – it takes time & effort to break them
- Involving younger generation or school children to work on sites in their immediate environment (e.g. next to their schools) can create meaningful emotional connections
- Participatory processes have to be repeated, and not carried out as one-offs
- Students can be the greatest allies in working on co-creation & climate neutrality

. What we see more and more emerging is not only punctual activities, but spaces of encounter that are always there for the citizens to use.
Compensating girls and teenagers for their time spent addressing urban and climate issues, and going to places where they feel safe are all important
Culture comes in with imagination, scaling up, design thinking, changing mindsets. At the same time, philanthropy and foundations can reach local activists, changemakers or artists with smaller grants, beyond the professionalised group of usual suspects
