Data is essential for the development of smart cities, enabling informed and impactful decisions with trustworthy information. Using real-life examples from two European cities, we will explore the critical role of data in shaping innovative and sustainable urban environments. We will look at how cities can turn data into action - promoting growth, transforming public engagement and designing services that genuinely reflect citizens’ needs. We will see how these data-driven approaches enhance sustainability, resilience and overall quality of life. Participants in this workshop will be engaged through interactive tools and participatory techniques.

Session summary
- Data is essential for the development of smart cities, enabling informed and impactful decisions with trustworthy information.
- Cities can turn data into action - promoting growth, transforming public engagement and designing services that genuinely reflect citizens’ needs.
- With real-life insights from our three speakers, i.e. Olaf Osica from the City of Warsaw, Mani Dhingra from Dublin City Council and Carlos Martins Ferreira from the European Data Portal, we demonstrated that data plays a critical role in shaping innovative, resilient and sustainable urban environments.
Although the workshop reached full capacity with 105 registrations, approximately 60 participants attended on the day.
The attendees actively engaged in the discussions throughout the event. The use of Slido allowed for interactive participation from the audience. Through the Slido tool, we discovered that half of the participants were affiliated with government and public authorities, nearly a quarter represented the private sector and industry, and just over one-fifth were from academia and research.
During the workshop, an engaging discussion with the audience focused on when and how data should be made available to citizens. The consensus was that transparency is crucial, although not all data necessarily belongs in the public domain.
