Session summary
Public transport is essential to reduce congestion, improve urban mobility, and its climate benefits are profound. In 2018, buses, trams and metros in EU cities carried some 50 billion passengers, replacing 36 billion annual car trips, or 100 million daily car trips. Investments in public transport and getting more people to use it can cut emissions from the transport sector by over 50% in the next decade. Public transport benefits the climate and positively impacts road safety, congestion, air pollution, and quality of urban life.
To highlight these positive impacts, UITP launched a campaign to promote the benefits of public transport for regions and cities, people, and the planet. As part of the campaign, a toolbox with ready-made materials has been created for local authorities and public transport networks to use in local actions promoting public transport to citizens in their area and raising awareness about the importance of their mobility choices.
Quotes

Public transport makes our cities, our lives and our planet better. Without it streets are congested, air turns grey with smog, and the economy slows down. Besides walking and cycling, public transport is the most climate friendly way to travel.
