- Alexandre Fernandes is the director of IIED Europe, a research organisation working on sustainable development challenges, with a focus on Europe as a lever for global change.
Alexandre has more than 20 years of experience in academic institutions, government agencies, not-for-profit research organisations, and intergovernmental initiatives on climate, biodiversity, water and oceans. Previous roles include senior science officer at the secretariat of the pan-European intergovernmental initiative “Connecting Climate Knowledge for Europe” (JPI Climate), Belgian focal point for the IPCC, and executive coordinator of the Scientific Council for Natural and Environmental Sciences at “Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia” (the Portuguese national public research funding agency).
With a PhD in the biological sciences, Alexandre is passionate about providing knowledge and solutions for effective and just climate action and sustainable development.
