The Municipality of Komotini, Greece, turned a key question into action: what happens when a city puts accessibility and inclusion at the heart of its urban agenda? Answer: a poorly planned medieval city is transformed into one of the most accessible cities in Europe. By embedding accessibility across policies and engaging disabled people as equal partners in design and decision-making, Komotini has become a model of participatory planning. Recognised with the Access City Award (2021), URBACT Good Practice City (2025), and as a finalist for the European Capitals of Inclusion and Diversity Award (2025), Komotini offers powerful lessons in inclusive, community-led urban transformation.
