Session summary
The workshop attracted a full room of representatives form regions and cities, tourism authorities across Europe. It proved there is a great interest in discussing how climate change impacts tourism destinations and above all - the need for sharing good practice from regional and local tourism authorities, researchers and businesses on concrete actions. Three speakers from different ecosystems gave a comprehensive picture of challenges and solutions: form the Arctic in Swedish Lapland, the mountain destinations of the French Alps and the Western Portuguese regions. Among important elements in adaptation are data and technologies to assess and monitor the sensitivity of territories to climate impacts, application of local knowledge, involving local communities in key strategic decisions impacting the future of the tourism destinations and consequently their livelihoods, addressing the challenge in cooperation with other sectors at all levels. Climate change risks and adapting to them by making tourism ecosystem more resilient will be among key priorities for Europe in the coming years.
